“English fabric, but Italian tailoring” was a saying in fine couture once upon a time, and this venerable adage applies equally well to this fully renovated fairy-tale come true in Pelham Manor, New York. Built in the Cotswold architectural style in 1929, this lovely “cottage” on a peaceful mews in Westchester with its English substantiality was brought to a new level of living with exquisite Italian tailoring!
Here in Pelham Manor, our client wanted all the charm of a Cotswold cottage but with the savvy, elegance, and warmth of the Italian aesthetic. A place to celebrate life and the people you share it with! We began by stripping out the existing interior finishes and opening walls to achieve the maximum spaciousness the owner desired. We then rebuilt it by upgrading the mechanicals, re-plastering, and painting. We repaired and patched the beautiful hundred-year-old solid wood floors and refinished them throughout.
An exceptionally brilliant idea was opening the kitchen walls to the dining area and building a modern European kitchen with trendsetting details such as custom cabinets, fixtures, hardware, center-island, butcher-block countertops, and a beautifully tiled backsplash and accent wall in terrazzo. We rewired for the new lighting fixtures and controls giving them the luminous flux from art gallery brightness to candlelit feel. A gorgeous, spacious living room, a gem of a powder room, and an old carriage garage fully renovated into a home office room completes this haute cottage.
The English may have bespoke, but when it comes to design, the Italians have “l’ultima parola” …“the final word!”
