Inspired by the youthful influx and industry of this trendsetting neighborhood, we revivified a great old wood framed house at 286 Powers Street. East Williamsburg is a dynamic and evolving neighborhood, blending its industrial past with a vibrant present.
Our biggest challenge here was leveling the old floors. Older stick-built buildings like these tend to settle and the floors start to dip. We brought in an engineer who specified jacking up the 1st floor from underneath with steel posts called lally columns which is exactly what we did. Think of walking into a room in your house and straightening a picture on the wall that had gone askew. Well, this is what we did with this entire house -lovingly, carefully, and structurally straightened it.
Our scope here was extensive including totally reworking the interior as well as the exterior. We stripped everything out down to the framing and structurally repaired old cracked and water-compromised beams and wall framing. We re-insulated, re-wired and re-clad the walls. In fact, we performed a complete electrical and lighting upgrade from installing a new electrical service in the basement to adding dozens of new outlets and light fixture locations throughout.
We brought the entire home up to the 21st Century with modern amenities such as a new washer and dryer, new lighting, and appliances. JBJ’s fine craftsman installed new wood floors, new doors and windows, new crown and base moldings, and great all new custom solid wood kitchen cabinets. We installed bright new bathrooms with all new tiling, plumbing and modern fixtures. We completed our work with smooth plastering and crisp painting.
